Gianluigi Buffon's actions in midweek during the Champions League quarter-final remains the talk of the sport, and Gennaro Gattuso has now offered his reaction.

The Juventus keeper was shown a straight red card for confronting referee Michael Oliver, who pointed to the spot in the dying stages.

Cristiano Ronaldo eventually converted the penalty, sending Real Madrid to the semi-finals.

But, despite the defending European champions booking a spot in the last four, the main takeaway from the second leg was Buffon's furious reaction.

And his former international colleague has weighed in. Though he's not one to judge while recalling his incident with then-Spurs assistant Joe Jordan.

"I am frankly the last person who can talk about the way others react," he said via Football Italia.

"I did much worse than that, because when the vein gets blocked up, you don't know what's going on. I nearly headbutted Joe Jordan, I went into the stands to insult Leonardo... I just can't talk."

While his loyalties lie with AC Milan, Gattuso did feel sad for Juventus.

"Gigi remains a great teammate and a great champion. When he feels ready, I think he will apologise. I felt sad for Juventus, but proud of Italian football.

"When I stepped on to the field, I was ready to do battle even against my own father if it meant victory for my team. I say it was my evil twin Rino who was on the pitch and to be honest that hasn't changed.

"I still feel embarrassed when I watch back footage of what I've done, especially now my son can see them on the Internet."

Before sounding off on the lack of VAR in the Champions League.

"Having said that, I can't understand why there is no VAR in the Champions League. What are referees for behind the line when you can put them in a room in front of a video replay? There is so much revolving around the Champions League, so many interests, it's unthinkable there's no VAR."

Does UEFA need to implement VAR in the Champions League?
