Football freeloading just turned more difficult after Reddit's popular soccer streaming page was shut-down due to allegedly infringing broadcast copyright rules.
Reddit's official /r/soccerstreams page quickly grew into an important platform for sports fans to publish illegal video links to football games from around Europe. By the time of its closure it had reached over 420,000 subscribers.
Soccer Streams moderation team posted the announcement on the site.
"We have reached critical mass," the first line reads.
"I regret to inform you all that a few days ago, the Reddit Admins got in touch with us about an impeding ban of this subreddit if changes weren't made.
"The only way to save it, from our perspective, was to cease all user related activity here. Due to this, and to save the history behind this subreddit over the years, /r/soccerstreams will now serve as a home base for the official Soccer Streams mod team.
"The aforementioned two are, for the moment, temporary solutions. We are working on a more permanent solution, however, due to the short notice we've had to work with what we have.
Lastly, it's been a pleasure running this community for you guys, especially those of you who have been visiting us from the early days. We hope that you'll continue to support us and allow us to find a new home for this wonderful community."
The Premier League has long been fighting a battle to retain its lucrative viewing rights value. Illegal streaming takes potential consumers away from paying services from major television broadcasters.
Will the Premier League eventually win the piracy battle? Or has that ship sailed in an internet dominated world?
