Luka Modric for Ballon d'Or 2018? Not for Edinson Cavani who has explained why.

The Croatian has enjoyed a stunning year for both club and country. He guided his side to European glory in the form of Champions League success.

As well as securing Croatia's best-ever finish at a World Cup - 2018 World Cup finalists.

He's performed heroically in the middle of the park, cementing his name as one of the best midfielders in the world football - if not the very best.

Naturally, Modric is in the running to scoop the coveted individual prize.

Experts, fans and fellow professionals are backing the 33-year-old but one player in the shape of Cavani doesn't think he should win the Ballon d'Or.

"[Raphael] Varane may well be up there. [Antoine] Griezmann, Mbappé," the Paris Saint-Germain striker told AS.

Before explaining how a Frenchman should win it, identifying Raphael Varane as a more deserving winner.

"For me, a Frenchman should win it. There are other players, but it should be a Frenchman; they've won big things. It should be one of those three.

"[Luka] Modric? He had a great season, but Varane won the Champions League and the World Cup. Modric was a finalist [at Russia 2018] and had a great season, but Varane deserves it more."

Interesting.

Of course, Modric's club colleague, Varane, also won the Champions League and went one further in Russia by winning the World Cup.

Another name in the discussion is Antoine Griezmann, and the 'Atleti' star is in 'pole position' according to Modric.

"I would put Antoine Griezmann in pole position in terms of the three Frenchmen, for all he has achieved this year," he told France Football.

"Mbappé? He's an extraordinary talent, a wonderful promise for the future but who has already displayed a great level," he added. "He's really special."
