Wayne Rooney returned for one final England appearance last night in a friendly match against the USA.

Of course, it would have been a dream moment for the former England captain to score at Wembley Stadium.

However, the 33-year-old former Manchester United star tried his best to add his name to the scoresheet, but it looks like the US players were ready for him the moment that he came on the pitch.

With the DC United player getting ready to come onto the pitch in the second half, Brad Guzan spoke to his backline about the England team wanting Rooney to score.

"I was saying to our defenders that obviously they were trying to get him to score, so we had to get close to him," he said after the match (via ESPN).

"It was as clear as day that they wanted him to score, so I said that to one of our centre-backs and he turned around and said, 'I know they're trying.'"

Rooney came close to scoring in the match, but the 34-year-old Atlanta United 'keeper denied him a dream finish.

Did Guzan feel bad about it? Absolutely not!

"Listen, you're not thinking about things like that, you're just trying to keep the score as low as possible," he explained.

"You laugh and joke about it afterwards but in the midst of the game you're not really thinking about it. You're just trying to keep the ball out."

It was United's Jesse Lingard who opened the scoring for Gareth Southgate's side with a brilliant finish. Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold doubled the Three Lions' lead, while Callum Wilson scored the third on his England debut.
