Gareth Bale's record breaking move to Real Madrid from White Hart Lane in 2013 was, at the time, the biggest transfer in history.

It was a deal that rocked world football, and among all the transfer fees and negotiations, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made sure that one clause was inserted in his contract.

Back in August, The Mirror reported that Levy made sure that the club have first option on former player Gareth Bale. That means if a club make a bid for the Welsh winger, then Spurs can match the offer within 72 hours.

Months after those reports emerged, Diario Gol via Team Talk have claimed that Spurs want to re-sign the winger, with chairman Daniel Levy willing to splash £54 million on the player - a significant amount lower than what Los Blancos paid.

Since moving to Spain life has been up and down for the winger, as the public struggle to fall in love with him despite Bale doing little wrong.

Bale has also been linked with a move to Manchester United for some time and Jose Mourinho's quotes about the Real Madrid man before the Super Cup final certainly raised eyebrows.

Mourinho praised the former Tottenham and Southampton winger when speaking to reporters in the Macedonian capital of Skopje.

The 'Special One' said via BBC Sport that he will 'fight with other coaches' and will wait for Bale 'at the departure gate' if he isn't in Zidane's plans:

"He is in the plans of the coach and the club, and it is in his own plans and ambitions to stay there, then I won't even think about it.

"If he is not in the club's plans and it is true that a player like Bale is at the departure gate, I will try to be there waiting for him at the other side."

Do you think Gareth Bale needs a move back to England to rebuild his career?

Or should he stay at Real Madrid and prove his doubters wrong?
