After nine months on the sidelines with a serious ACL injury, Ilkay Gundogan finally returned to action on Wednesday evening.

The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder received a rapturous welcome from Manchester City fans on his first appearance since December, last year, and Gundogan impressed many on his eagerly anticipated return.

But his time on the field was cut short after a nasty challenge by Claudio Yacob left the German in a heap.

As he clutched his left ankle, you could immediately sense Gundogan's frustration.

Just before the hour mark, the 26-year-old was replaced by Kyle Walker.

Manchester City went onto to win the game after a brace from Leroy Sane secured a place in the fourth round, but Gundogan's latest injury scare overshadowed an impressive victory for Pep Guardiola's side.

Yabob received a yellow card for his challenge on the player, and equalised shortly after Gundogan hobbled off the field.

But Sane's 76th minute winner sealed the win.

Here's how Twitter reacted to Gundogan's injury:

We wish Gundogan all the best in his recovery.

Let's hope it's not another serious injury.
