Was anybody else brought up with the theory that Jelly Babies are the greatest pre-match meal in existence? The Jelly Baby sweet falls into the 'simple' carbohydrate category - the perfect food to prepare you for a 90 minute game.

Back in the Sunday League days, my gaffer used to tell us that Jelly Babies not only stopped your legs from going to 'jelly', but that sweet burst of sugar gave you the necessary energy levels to play like Ronaldinho.

Anyway, the reason why I bring up the famous 'Jelly Baby theory' is because Lionel Messi was caught eating from his sock during Barcelona's 3-1 win against Olympiakos on Wednesday night.

Messi may have scored his 100th European goal against the Greek side, but his antics in the 10th minute have somewhat overshadowed his impressive feat. 'What was he eating?' many people asked.

If you haven't seen the clip, here's the moment Messi fancied a bite to eat at the Camp Nou:

It has been revealed by Spanish publication SPORT that Messi was in fact eating a Glucose tablet.

The report claims that the five time Ballon d'Or winner took the tablet before the "first 15 minutes of physical effort is when the muscles are most receptive."

According to Marca, Messi is known to rely on glucose pulls to control the nausea he suffers before and after matches

During his post-match press conference, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde admitted that he didn't know whether Messi took a Glucose tablet, but because the player scored a goal, "he should take a load of them.":

"I don't know if he took a glucose tablet. If it made him score a goal, then he should take a load of them. But I do know the players do take glucose" he said in his post-match presser.
