It has emerged that Sunderland midfielder Darron Gibson was involved in a car crash close to the club's training ground, this morning.

Images of several cars smashed up on Dovedale Road in Fulwell soon emerged on social media, as well a picture of Gibson with a Northumbria Police officer on the scene of the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving over the legal alcohol limit and he is currently in police custody."

"Inquiries are ongoing and the arrest follows the report of a car colliding with a number of parked vehicles in Dovedale Road, Sunderland. "Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 458 of today's date."

According to The Sunderland Echo, the identity of the arrested man has not been confirmed by the police force, but The Sun report that Gibson was the man arrested for drink driving for a second time.

The report also states that witnesses said Gibson was in one of the cars when the collision happened on Saturday morning.

A Sunderland AFC spokesman said it was "aware of a traffic accident" but would not add any further comment.
