Fair play.

It was branded one of the worst refereeing decisions in Champions League history.

Raheem Sterling tripped on the turf, unopposed, and the referee decided to give a penalty kick, to the utter amusement and bemusement of many.

Shakthar Donetsk players protested as Sterling looked a tad guilty, but the penalty was given and Gabriel Jesus converted to make it 2-0

Yes, you could say the spot-kick wasn't exactly a pivotal moment in the 6-0 thrashing, but some have criticised Sterling for not admitting his mistake during the incident.

Well, the England international spoke about the 'calamity' and has apologised to the referee and the opposition for his role in the penalty. Fair play, Raheem.

"I don't think I felt contact, it was just my bad. I hit the floor and scuffed the floor. Apologies to the ref and apologies to Shakhtar."

In another interview with Virgin Media Sport, he admitted that he mistimed the kick, and once again said sorry to the official.

"As I've said, I've gone through on goal, mistimed the kick and yeah, it was a calamity. So, Sorry on my behalf. Sorry to the ref, I didn't try to con him. I just made a mistake and kicked the floor."

You have to feel for the England winger on this occasion. He'll get some criticism for 'diving' but he seems just to trip after stubbing his toe on the ground and he's hardly going to stop the ref giving a penalty.

Following the apology, many fans backed Sterling, and said he didn't have to apologise.
