Harry Maguire has the potential to become as good as Virgil van Dijk. Well, that's according to Sam Allardyce whose backed the England international to go to "another level" if he moved to Manchester United.

Maguire has been the subject of intense transfer speculation with United pursuing his services ahead of the new season.

An £80 million transfer has reportedly been agreed with Leicester City, but a deal has yet to be finalised.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær remains in the market for a new defender with Maguire at the top of his transfer list and if they can strike a deal, Allardyce believes the United boss could have a player similar to Van Dijk.

"He's similar to Van Dijk, he's very good on the ball and he comes out from the back," the ex-England gaffer said about Maguire on talkSPORT.

"Van Dijk looks a little better since he's gone to Liverpool and I think it would take Maguire to another level going to Manchester United and bring more out of him.

"It would be a massive move for him, but Leicester, they don't have to sell.

"They've always hung out for the fee they want and got there in the end, so if United don't have another alternative, I'm afraid they might have to pay a bit more than they expected."

Maguire has played a combined 69 Premier League games for the Foxes since his switch from Hull City in 2017, and he continued to enhance his reputation during the 2018 World Cup.

He performed heroically at the back for England, but fans, mainly from Liverpool, aren't convinced with Allardyce's bold comparison.

Van Dijk, who cost Liverpool £75 million, has been immense since leaving Southampton.

He played every league game last season as the Reds narrowly missed out on the league title. But, on a personal note, the Dutchman scooped the PFA Players' Player of the Year.

And he's also in the running for the coveted Ballon d'Or.
