Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has held his hands up and admitted that in the latter years of his career, he tried to play like Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos.

Kroos scored during Madrid's 3-1 victory against Napoli in the Champions League last night, and it seems the German international has made a big impression on Scholes.

Speaking to German magazine Kicker, Scholes claims Kroos is the best midfielder in the world and that he would be the perfect foil to United duo Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera.

He said:

"I really like Toni Kroos, when I came to the end of my career, I watched him closely and tried to play like Kroos," admits Scholes.

"I was a rather forward-looking midfielder, but Toni is the best in the world, and Kroos would be perfect next to Pogba and Ander Herrera at United."

Scholes also spoke about Bastian Schweinsteiger's current situation at Old Trafford, with United boss Jose Mourinho clearly favouring other options in his midfield.

"I find it remarkable how highly professional Bastian has responded by simply working without complaining."

"Schweinsteiger can still control a game if you leave it, and I hope the manager leaves him. The fans love Bastian, he's a very special player."
