They might have dominated in terms of possession, but the Italians couldn't find a breakthrough in their World Cup qualifier against Sweden on Monday night and have therefore failed in their attempts to reach the World Cup.

For the first time since 1958, the likes of Gianluigi Buffon and Giorgio Chiellini will not appear in next summer's competition in Russia and as Gary Lineker said on Twitter this evening, we simply cannot imagine a tournament without the famous Blue.

Italy lost the first leg of their qualifier back on November 10 after Jakob Johansson found the net from 20 yards at the Friends Arena, but despite Italy manager Giampiero Ventura saying that his side needed a 'great performance' in the second leg of their play-off, it never quite happened at the San Siro.

Before the game had even started, the great Gianluigi Buffon cemented his place in Italian history when he applauded the Sweden National anthem. As Italy fans unfortunately jeered, Buffon proceeded to applaud instead of watch and listen to the boos.
