El Clasico Is Set To Change Forever And It's Controversial

El Clasico Is Set To Change Forever And It's Controversial

Is this really a good idea?

There's nothing quite like the atmosphere of an El Clasico.

After months of anticipation, either the Bernabeu or the Camp Nou is a cauldron of noise, filled to the rafters with passionate, almost religious support from around the area. This isn't just a fixture - it's a statement of intent.

But what if I told you that these historic fixtures could be played outside of these famous stadiums?

La Liga president, Javier Tebas, has confirmed that discussions are ongoing to stage La Liga games abroad - with the USA and China mentioned in these plans.

Tebas' aim is to expand the league's global appeal, and in an interview with the Financial Times, the 55-year-old discussed the possibility of matches outside of Spain:

"La Liga is global entertainment and we want to grow [the league's] international appeal. As part of that effort we are discussing the option of playing some of the league matches outside of Spain."

His plans may be ambitious, and certainly controversial, but the Premier League are not looking to expand any time soon.

Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, said that those plans to move games abroad are unrealistic:

"There is no [current] plan to do it. The clubs would like to do it but we are also realistic that says until the reaction is any more warm, it won't happen,"

"If it did, it wouldn't be a 39th game ... but there is no prospect of it happening any time soon. We have no time set for it but I am a man of belief. I thought it was the right thing to do, I still do."

Do you think the plan to move La Liga fixtures abroad is a good idea? Can you imagine El Clasico in the US or China?
