Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk says only Celtic Park's atmosphere on European nights can come close to matching the ambiance created on similar evenings at Anfield.

The Netherlands captain spent two years in Glasgow at the Premiership champions between 2013 and 2015, before signing for Southampton, and then Liverpool last January.

He's undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in English and European football at the moment, and the 27-year-old has been taking a stroll down memory lane.

Speaking to ESPN FC, via the Mirror about the atmosphere at Anfield for some of the continental clashes he's been involved in so far, he said:

"It's very special. I don't think there's anything like it. The games we played last year against Man City and Roma at home were unbelievable, the atmosphere. It's just something special.

"You need to experience it so you can properly explain it, and to play in those circumstances is something special.

"Celtic Park was outstanding as well, I enjoyed every bit there, so it might be a bit similar.

"But they are two amazing clubs, and I'm glad that I've played for them. I'm very happy that I play for Liverpool now."

Van Dijk played in the Champions League and Europa League whilst wearing the green and white hoops, whilst he reached the final of the Champions League under Jurgen Klopp's guidance last season.
