Arsenal fans have demanded the club give Rob Holding the captain's armband after he refused to sign a Tottenham shirt in a hilarious exchange with a fan in America.

The Gunners are Stateside for the club's pre-season tour and before facing Real Madrid in a friendly match, Holding and his teammates walked past a group of supporters.

Fans hurled shirts for him to sign, including a Spurs fan who tried to get his jersey signed by the Arsenal defender.

However, once Holding realised it was a Spurs top he immediately swerved it before leaving the scene with a cheeky grin on his face.

Needless to say, Arsenal fans loved it. Here's some reaction from Twitter:

It appears Unai Emery will listen to their demands. He's set to name the 23-year-old Englishman as one of his 'five captains' for the new season.

"I want one English player in these five captains," the Spanish gaffer said.

"Last year (Granit) Xhaka, Mesut (Ozil) and Nacho (Monreal) were working as captains. But after Aaron Ramsey and Petr Cech left - and possibly Laurent Koscielny - I will want more.

"An English player who grew up in our academy can understand the English spirit and Arsenal values. These are the qualities and more (we want).

"We are really happy with his (Holding's) progress. We need his performances as a centre back. (Before) he had his injury he was really playing with big performance."

Holding had an injury hit campaign last season as he played just 10 league games, but he'll be hoping to become a regular fixture in Emery's set-up once he's fully fit.
