Given that Atletico Madrid have reached two of the last four Champions League finals, it seems almost unthinkable to picture a round of 16 without Diego Simeone's men, yet here we are, preparing for a second phase of Europe's elite club competition without Los Rojiblancos for the first time since 2013.

And for Antoine Griezmann in particular, Atleti's early exit is proving to be extremely embarrassing.
When the draw for this season's group stage was made back in August, pitting Griezmann and co in a tough looking group with Premier League champions Chelsea, Serie A giants Roma and Azerbaijani minnows Qarabag, the Frenchman took to Twitter to voice his approval of the draw with a picture entitled 'Me Gusta', which translates as 'I like it'.
Presumably, the former Real Sociedad forward wasn't hinting that he felt qualification from the group was a foregone conclusion, but it seems in hindsight, many people are treating it that way after Atleti slumped into the Europa League after a disappointing performance in the group stage, winning just one of their six matches.

On the bright side, at least Atleti will now be one of the favourites to lift the Europa League and have Diego Costa coming into their team in the new year. So all hope's not lost, Antoine.
