Aleksandr Golovin Steals The Show In World Cup Opener

What a performance.

The standard of football in the World Cup opener between Russia and Saudi Arabia wasn't exactly great but the game was worth watching just for CSKA Moscow star Aleksandr Golovin.

Though his compatriot Denis Cheryshev had an absolute stormer and bagged a brace, the 22-year old was the star of the show and the Man of the Match, laying on two sensational assists, playing a key part in the second goal and capping off a stunning display with sumptuous last minute free-kick.

For the first goal of the tournament, he picked out Yuri Gazinsky with a glorious delivery on his head 12 minutes in and followed it up with a cross equally as good from the other flank in the second half - this time Artem Dzyuba being on hand to head home a third for the hosts.

The last-gasp free-kick to make it five was the most perfect way to end a game that belonged to him.

Golovin's display brought a whole lot of praise on social media - with several Arsenal fans wanting their club to reignite their interest in him after his heroics this evening:

Juventus have been heavily linked with a deal for Golovin, whose value will have increased significantly following his performance on the grand stage.

He's set the tone for the tournament and we very much look forward to see who else is going to do bits in the next batch of games.
