Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has secured the top spot of UEFA's rankings for international performances over the course of the season.

Marca reports that UEFA based its decision on different criteria on a player's position, with the 32-year-old Spanish centre-back pulling ahead of the competition through his stats.

According to the Spanish newspaper, Ramos had the lowest figures when it came to making errors and fouls, while he also earned points for his passing completion rate and successful interceptions.

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk and Switzerland's Haris Seferović came second and third respectively, while Ukraine's Andriy Pyatov finished fourth and in fifth place was France's Antoine Griezmann, who scored a superb volley in his side's opening Euro 2020 qualifying match against Moldova last week.

Ramos was in action for Spain on Saturday, with the former World Cup and Euro champions taking on Norway in their Euro 2020 qualifier.

Rodrigo opened the scoring for Luis Enrique's men in the first half, while Joshua King equalised for his side in the second half after he scored from the spot kick.

Ramos, who was recently praised by King for his sportsmanship, went on to score the winner with a cheeky Panenka penalty.

Following on from the match, the Spain boss showered his captain with the highest of praises.

"We did well and we knew we would have to suffer to win because Norway defend well, but we did that," he told RTVE (via Marca).

"Sergio Ramos did very well for us with his penalty. He is a unique player in history.

"I'm happy with everything, with the attitude and how we performed after our talk in training during the week.

"We just have to be happy and value all of the positives. I'm confident we can improve with the support of the players.

"I think that we deserved to win 5-1 or 6-1, but football only rewards you for goals and we knew we had to be physically strong."

Spain are back in action on Tuesday for their next Euro 2020 qualifying match against Malta.
