Over in seventh tier of Italian football, a player was penalised for swearing in his own box and a penalty was awarded to the opposition by the referee.

Bacigalupo and Barracuda played out a five-goal thriller but the game will have to be replayed after the referee, Salvatore Sangiovanni practically invented his own rule when he heard visiting player Gianpiero Opsi using some colourful language that also included some blasphemy.

He gave Bacigalupo a penalty and it proved crucial in the end as the hosts won 3-2. Feeling they were hard done by, Barracuda issued an immediate complaint and the referee admitted his error in his match report - meaning the game will take place again in the next couple of weeks.

Going by the laws of the game, the man in the middle should have awarded an indirect free-kick instead of a penalty but at least he's accepted his mistake.

Earlier this season in Serie A, Rolando Mandragora of Udinese was given a one-game ban for uttering "blasphemous remarks" in frustration when Sampdoria goalkeeper Emil Audero denied him.

"Porca Madonna, Vaffanculo, Dio Cane", an insult to the Virgin Mary, was what the former Juventus man said and it caused huge controversy in Italy as saying God's name in vain is deemed to be very offensive.

"After acquiring and examining the relevant television images, the player, while cursing without referring to anybody around him, was nevertheless clearly seen by the television images to make blasphemous remarks, visibly identifiable from reading his lips without any margin for reasonable doubt," read a disciplinary report from the Lega Serie A, who elected to punish Mandragora after reviewing video footage.
