A few months back we told you how Philippe Coutinho was applying for a Portuguese passport, something he qualifies for through his wife of six years, Aine.

Well, it seems as though he's very close to being granted dual citizenship and it will be hugely beneficial for Barcelona in regards to this summer's transfer plans, as well as in the future.

Both Mundo Deportivo and Marca are reporting the news, with there being word that the process is at an advanced stage and he's already told the RFEF (La Liga governing body) he expects to have dual nationality before the 2018/19 season gets away.

He'll be following in the footsteps of his teammate Luis Suarez, who managed to explore the loophole and obtain Italian citizenship thanks to his wife, Sofia Balbi.

It means Coutinho would move into an EU slot in the Barcelona squad and help them get around squad restrictions which prevent Spanish clubs from having more than three EU players in their ranks.

Recent new signings Arthur and Yerry Mina are both Non-EU players as they are Brazilian and Colombian respectively.

But following Paulinho's surprise return to Guangzhou Evergrande in China, and Coutinho likely getting the final seal of approval in his application - the Blaugrana would be free to go after Chelsea winger Willian, a non-EU player and a top target, without needing to get rid of anyone already at the club.
