Odds Slashed On England To Host 2022 World Cup After Michel Platini Was Detained

The arrest of ex-UEFA president Michel Platini has caused England's odds of hosting the 2022 World Cup ahead of Qatar come crashing down.

A well-known bookmaker has slashed odds on England to host the 2022 World Cup after former UEFA president Michel Platini was detained.

Coral has dropped England's odds from 10-1 to 6-1 to take over from Qatar as the tournament's new host nation.

"Since it was awarded the 2022 World Cup, there has been nothing but controversy around why Qatar were selected as hosts and following this latest development, the betting suggests there is a strong chance they could now be stripped of the tournament," Coral spokesperson John Hill told the Daily Star.

"If a new host is required, England are likely to be one of the favourites as they are one of the few countries who could hold the tournament at short notice with their infrastructure and transport."

The former UEFA official was taken into custody over allegations surrounding the next World Cup tournament.

According to French site Mediapart, the 63-year-old Frenchman's detainment is linked to the bidding process for the international competition.

And it's not the first time that questions have been raised about the Middle East hosting the World Cup.

Conservative Party MP Damian Collins, the chairman of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport select committee, told the Sun in February that Qatar's selection should be investigated and reviewed.

"It's absolutely the case that the decision to award the World Cup to Qatar has to be reviewed," he explained.

"It is clear that the decision not to publish the full report was an attempt to cover up the full extent of corruption at FIFA.

"FIFA was aware of serious allegations and deliberately attempted to stop them emerging.

"It looks like inappropriate payments to get votes. If that is the case, Qatar should lose the right to host the World Cup."

Should England become the host nation if Qatar is stripped of the World Cup?
