Mathematicians Simulate One Million Seasons Of The Premier League

Mathematicians Simulate One Million Seasons Of The Premier League

From Manchester United and Liverpool to Manchester City and Chelsea, one side has dominated the Premier League era over one million seasons.

Who would have the most title wins in the Premier League era after one million seasons?

Don't worry, there's no need for a crystal ball.

Professor Tony Padilla and Dr Adam Moss from the University of Nottingham's Physics Department have put the what-if question into practice.

Posting on the Numberphile YouTube channel, the results of the simulation showed that Manchester City would be the undisputed kings of the Premier League era.

According to Padilla and Moss' experiment, the reigning league champions captured the title on 896,313 occasions.

From there, Liverpool are far, far behind in second place with 45,862 Premier League titles, while third place is Manchester United with 34,964 wins.

The rest of the Premier League winners from the simulation can be viewed below.

  • Tottenham Hotspur: 18,757
  • Arsenal: 2,344
  • Chelsea: 1,760

Interestingly, there are some other eye-catching statistics from the test.

City recorded the biggest points tally with 114, while the club also had the biggest win with a 20-1 thrashing of Bournemouth.

Goals are also an important part of the simulation, with it bringing in some surprising scorelines.

City featured in the highest-scoring match when they beat Everton 17-5. Meanwhile, Chelsea set a record with the most goals for a losing team, which they achieved in their 11-10 loss to Everton.

It's not the best of news for Chelsea, though. In fact, they ended up getting relegated on five occasions -- Roman Abramovich was probably furious -- while Bournemouth surprised many by qualifying for the Champions League 89 times.

Southampton almost did a Leicester City by winning the Premier League title, but fell short and finished in second place (at least they secured Champions League football, right?).

While this experiment is a little bit more out there, it's not the first time that a certain method has been used to predict a specific outcome of the Premier League title.

Last month, a supercomputer predicted the Premier League winner this season after simulating the remaining matches 10,000 times.

On another occasion, an experiment showed how City and Liverpool's title challenge would end this season.

Who will win the Premier League title this season?
