Not what they are after...

Manchester United fans are probably not best pleased with the latest Wayne Rooney news.

The club skipper has been in and out of the side this season and was heavily linked with a move to the Chinese Super League not too long ago.

That move didn't come about but Rooney continues to be linked with a move away - with former club Everton and West Ham being talked about as potential destinations should Rooney depart Old Trafford in the summer.

The latest lot of Rooney news isn't related to his future at Old Trafford but will still grind the gears of United supporters.

It's in regards to his position in the side for the upcoming visit of West Brom.

United have a plethora of their big guns out for the game and so Rooney is likely to come back into the side.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini are all injured, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera are suspended, as per The Mirror.

The sale of Bastian Schweinsteiger to Chicago Fire means that United have one fit recognised first-team central midfielder at present, that being Michael Carrick.

Rooney has been injured himself and is on his way back to fitness, but might have to be called upon in central midfield on Saturday because of the sheer lack of options available to Jose Mourinho at the moment.

The 32-year old played as a central midfielder regularly under Louis van Gaal and though naturally he's a player that drops deep to get involved with the play, United fans weren't advocates of his performances in the position.

Many believe that an older Rooney lacks the mobility and intelligence to play in central midfield and watching a less than sharp captain return in midfield against a West Brom side who have just beaten Arsenal might be a tough watch for fans.

Left-back Daley Blind is capable of playing in midfield and did so under Van Gaal. United fans will likely be hoping he gets the nod for the visit of West Brom.

United fans, do you want to see Rooney return in midfield? Is there an alternative?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
