Virgil van Dijk immediately confronted Joris Gnagnon for his reckless tackle on youngster Yasser Larouci at full-time following Liverpool's pre-season defeat to Sevilla.

Van Dijk wasted no time in approaching Gnagnon after the full-time whistle. The Frenchman was shown a straight red card for a horrific tackle on Larouci.

The Dutchman walked over to Gnagnon, who was sat on the side of the pitch, and leant over the advertising hoardings to give the youngster a piece of his mind.

Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson also confronted Gnagnon. Sevilla players and coaches then made their way to the 22-year-old.

The Liverpool trio, though, shook hands with the Sevilla team before leaving the situation in an unsatisfactory ending to the friendly game.

Speaking to reporters after Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Sevilla, Van Dijk expressed his anger at Gnagnon.

"I saw it from the side and it's not nice," he said.

"Especially when it happens against a young guy who is playing pretty well this season, it's not great to see.

"I think it says something about him (Gnagnon). You have to just deal with it but obviously you don't want to have injuries in pre-season, you want to get fit, get back to your best and want to play to win but the most important thing is to get fit.

"Hopefully for Yasser it is not that bad."

James Milner added: "There were some disgraceful tackles, we know it was a friendly, but you don't see many red cards in a friendly.

"They said we should have put it out, but it is up to the referee. If you want to foul, pull a shirt. Don't take a young lad by the knee. Seeing it again it is a disgrace."

Liverpool resume their US pre-season tour on Thursday in New York against Sporting CP.
