Liverpool have reportedly made drastic attempts to try and convince Philippe Coutinho to remain with the club.

The Brazilian was subject to three bids from Barcelona in the summer, but he ended up staying put at Liverpool, where he's scored 12 goals and chipped in with eight assists in a stunning individual campaign so far.

The rampant rumours about his future have returned though, and Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo say that in desperation, Liverpool have made him a big offer to try and fend off Barca's interest.

They report that the Reds have offered him a new and improved contract to the one he signed just under a year ago.

That's not all though, as apparently part of the package is that they are prepared to give the former Inter Milan man the permanent captaincy and let him take over from regular skipper Jordan Henderson.

Coutinho was captain for the 7-0 rout of Spartak Moscow in the Champions League group stage, scoring a hat-trick in a scintillating display.

However, they say that the 25-year old's response wasn't exactly positive - he thanked the club for the offer but informed them he still desires to move to the Nou Camp.

The same outlet also add that that Barcelona will table a fresh £133 million bid to try and prise away Coutinho this January.

It's believed the La Liga leaders will pay £100 million upfront, with a further £36 million following in add-ons. That would likely be more appealing to Liverpool, but it's worth noting this is only one of a flurry of reports on Coutinho to Barcelona - the story just won't go away.

Coutinho was absent from the Liverpool squad as they beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor on New Year's Day, with the word being that he had suffered a minor thigh problem.
