Liverpool Fan Rearranges Wedding To Watch UEFA Champions League Final 2019

A final that cannot be missed...

If you're the type of football fan who leaves games 15 minutes before full-time to miss the post-match traffic or sells their tickets to midweek matches because it clashes with your pub quiz, then look away now, because you're about to be embarrassed by the efforts of some hardcore superfans.

Tottenham and Liverpool supporters are going to extraordinary lengths to watch the Champions League final between the two teams on June 1st. Normally, a trip to the Spanish capital would require little more than a seat on a low budget airline, a couple of nights at a city centre hotel, and a few Euros for one or two Spanish lagers - but next weekend is no ordinary weekend.

With thousands of football fans converging on Madrid over the coming days, the cost of direct flights has soared to over £1000 and every hotel or hostel bed has been taken, leaving some fans fearing they'll have to pay extortionate prices to get there or even miss out on the game altogether. But nothing gets in the way of a super fan and a Champions League final.

Tottenham season ticket holder Tre Sutherland was at a gig the night before tickets went on sale and spent the entire evening on her smartphone looking at every possible route. "I was thinking to myself, 'How do I get there without remortgaging my house?' she said. Luckily, four airlines and four flight bookings later, her home and financial security were safe. "I have two, four-hour stopovers at changeover airports in Ibiza and Majorca - it's all worked out grand.

It's not just Spurs fans doing everything in their power to watch their beloved club in action. Liverpool fan Dylan Roach was due to get married on June 1 but after learning his big day clashed with the final, he pushed his wedding back to August 3. "It's been a logistical nightmare for us," he said. "We didn't want loads of our friends and family to miss the wedding because they were travelling to Madrid and it means we get to watch the game as well."

But what if you were a bride-to-be with a Liverpool supporting fiancee, whose best man was a Spurs fan and your wedding was on the same day as the final - would you let him watch? "When I found out about the game I had a bridezilla moment because I knew they'd want to watch it," said Simonie Starkey. "But I came to my senses - it is a huge game and i'm not going to stop them," She's even agreed to erect a big screen at the ceremony to enable all guests to enjoy the action. "If we're going to watch it we're going to do it big," she added.

Scores of other supporters of both clubs are also devising inventive schemes to ensure they don't miss out on the action. Liverpool-mad Marie Lysaght has rearranged her son's birthday party to cater for the big game. "I'd planned a big camping weekend for him but i've scrapped that - we're having a birthday/Champions League final party in Liverpool instead. Nobody wanted to be in the middle of a field while the game was on."

Last, but certainly not least, Auckland-based Tottenham fan Michael Blackman has spent £2207 on a ticket via a resale website on top of the £800 cost of a long haul flight. He'll fly to Valencia before hiring a Renault Espace, which he'll station in a local leisure centre car park, and pay £10 per day to use their bathroom facilities ahead of driving to Madrid for the final. "I can't believe i'm doing this as a 45-year-old man," he said. Neither can we.
