Diego Maradona might have carried his own country to winning a World Cup, something that would make you a Saint in England, but he certainly won't be the most popular man in Argentina tonight.

Maradona is a man who often comes up in the conversation about who is the best player to have ever graced the game of football.

In days gone by the 56 year old was always compared to Pele with many split about who is the greatest of all time but these days the pair are joined by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The problem for his fellow countryman Messi is that he's never won an international tournament so people use it as a stick to beat him with.

He won't be able to fix that if Argentina don't qualify for the World Cup in 2018, something that is made all the more difficult by the Barcelona forward's four match suspension.

Messi picked up his ban this afternoon for swearing at a linesman in Argentina's win over Chile last week and according to reports Maradona gave the green light for his countryman to be suspended.

Journalist Gonza Stupenengo reported the news with his tweet:

Maradona's current position is as a FIFA ambassador presumably because after his stint as national team manager for the 2010 World Cup he can't get another managerial gig.

Messi, who retired from international football last summer before returning almost immediately, only found out about his suspension with a few hours to go before Argentina's match.

The team take on Bolivia tonight in World Cup qualifying and some reports have suggested that the AFA weren't informed of the decision until they released the statement on social media.

Messi was given the highest ban of four games for swearing at the assistant referee last week and misses all but one of his country's remaining qualifying games.

He won't be inviting Maradona for a drink any time soon.
