Manchester City appear to have been hit with a major injury blow just a week into the season - with reports that Kevin De Bruyne has suffered a knee injury during a training.

City Watch, the premier account for Manchester City news, reported the news, before Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur followed up shortly after with further confirmation.

Though there's no official confirmation from the club, the fact there's talk that it's similar to the injury sustained in the Capital One Cup semi-final against Everton in January 2016 is incredibly concerning.

On that occasion, De Bruyne was out of action for a total of 12 games and missed the Capital One Cup final win at Wembley, but was back on 2 April to score in a 4-0 win over Bournemouth.

Sam Lee from Goal has since reported that the Belgian international is already on crutches from the training ground and will be assessed in both Manchester and Barcelona.

City are well-stocked in the midfield positions, with Ilkay Gundogan, David and Bernardo Silva as well as the emergence of exciting 17-year old Phil Foden.

But the importance of De Bruyne, easily the club's best player in the record-breaking 2017/18 season, cannot be overstated.

Last term, he laid on an incredible 16 assists for his teammates and won the first ever Premier League 'Playmaker of the Season' award.
