Gonzalo Higuaín has officially completed his move from AC Milan to Chelsea.

The 31-year-old Argentine striker had been linked with the Blues for some time, with Maurizio Sarri finally landing his man in the January transfer window.

The Premier League side have signed him on loan and he will return to parent club Juventus after the 30th June.

However, Chelsea might be able to keep hold of the former Napoli and Real Madrid ace should they choose.

Juventus have released a statement that their agreement with AC Milan has been terminated (obviously) and that a new one has been set up with the London club.

According to the reigning Serie A champions, Chelsea have the option to extend his loan deal until 30th June 2020 if they pay €18m in the 2019/2020 financial year.

Should the Blues not take up that option, then they could make the deal permanent for €36m and the payment would be made in two financial years.

"Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that the agreement with AC Milan S.p.A. for the temporary transfer of the player Gerardo Gonzalo Higuaín has been terminated and, at the same, the agreement with Chelsea Football Club Ltd for the loan, until 30th June 2019, of the player has been finalized," reads the statement.

"These operations do not generate any significant economic effects in the current financial year.

"The agreement also grants to Chelsea FC the options to extend the duration of the loan until 30th June 2020, for a consideration of €18m to be paid in 2019/2020 financial year, or to acquire the registration rights of the player on a permanent basis for €36m to be paid in two financial years."

Chelsea confirmed that Higuaín would be wearing the number nine shirt during his time at the club.

"When the opportunity to join Chelsea presented itself, I had to take it," he said.

"It's a team I've always liked that has a lot of history, a wonderful stadium and they play in the Premier League, a league I've always wanted to play in.

"I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch. I can't wait to start and I hope to adapt as soon as possible."

Marina Granovskaia, the director of football at Chelsea, added: "Gonzalo was our number one target in this transfer window and arrives with a proven record at the highest level. He has previously worked with Maurizio to great effect and is familiar with how the coach likes to play.

"This was not an easy deal for us to do because of the numerous parties involved, but we are delighted we were able to make it happen and we look forward to seeing the impact Gonzalo will make for us in the second half of the season."
