Jamie Redknapp feels Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is exactly what Manchester United need to seriously challenge rivals Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho's side did improve their league position from sixth to second and it's emerged that their overall points tally of 81 would have secured the title in some other seasons.

But having lost to all three newly-promoted clubs in addition to having been dumped out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage - as well as finishing 19 points behind City, it's been a hugely disappointing campaign by all accounts.

Victory in next week's FA Cup final would go a long way to pleasing United fans but they have a huge summer window on their hands and they need to get recruitment spot on.

As always, several names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford - and Sky Sports' pundit Redknapp feels signing Bale is a necessity.

"They finished second and could win the FA Cup but let's face it... this is one of the most boring United teams," Redknapp said in his column in the Daily Mail.

"They signed off the league season with a 1-0 win over Watford that was shown last on Match of the Day. If Jose Mourinho wants to change that, he should go and buy Gareth Bale.

"He has won it all at Real Madrid and won't be fazed by the Premier League. United won't be the only ones after him. If Eden Hazard goes to Real Madrid, I'm sure Chelsea would be keen on a swap deal.

"After a season of limited game time, Bale will be keen to prove he is still a world-class talent. What better way to do so than inspire a team to properly challenge City."

Though Bale has lifted plenty on silverware and could be about to win the Champions League for the fourth time, things haven't been plain-sailing at Real ever since he made then world-record switch in 2013 - injuries reducing his game-time significantly.

Still, he remains a world-class talent and displayed just what supreme abilities he has by scoring a brilliant brace in Real's 6-0 thrashing of Celta Vigo.

Heavily linked with a return to the Premier League, would Bale be the perfect signing for United or should they turn their attentions elsewhere?

Sound off in the comments.
