The great new dawn for England football will start with Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott starting against Malta. Gareth Southgate revealed that the Arsenal forward and Manchester United captain will start in his first game in charge.

With Sam Allardyce being sacked after one match due to his off field shenanigans the FA are left with Southgate in charge for the next fours games. For three World Cup qualifiers and a friendly the former Middlesbrough boss has the chance to impress as an audition.

He hasn't got off to the best of starts, even before a ball is kicked, after he recalled Glen Johnson to the team. Fortunately for everyone bar Johnson the Stoke right back is injured and can't play!

Now the former centre back has confirmed that the inform Walcott and captain Rooney will start, although he didn't confirm what position the latter would play in:

Walcott's inclusion is no surprise. The Arsenal winger has five goals in all competitions this season and even with Raheem Sterling's injury he was likely to play.

Rooney on the other hand. Many will question his inclusion considering the fact he can't even get in United's team right now and has no form to speak of.

The chances are the England captain will play in central midfield for the national team tomorrow and against Malta it shouldn't really matter!
