Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has finally confirmed that Gary Cahill will be the Chelsea captain, 10 weeks after the 2018 season started.

Sarri was appointed to his role back in July, but had wanted to wait until he had been around the players for a while before deciding who would wear the armband for the Blues.

In his press conference today, Sarri confirmed that Cahill would be club captain whenever he is on the pitch, in his absence Cesar Azpilicueta has worn the armband as he has featured in more competitions.

The 32-year-old was also given the armband by former manager Antonio Conte last season.

"As we have seen in the last matches the captain is Cahill, and if Cahill is not on the pitch, the captain is Azpilicueta, like at Burnley," Sarri said.

"Our captain is Cahill. Cahill was the captain last season. I spoke with his team-mates and everybody told me he was a really a very good captain."

Cahill has only featured five times for Chelsea so far this season, twice in the EFL, twice in the Europa League and once in the Premier League.

During that Premier League appearance, Cahill only played for 21 minutes off the bench and was not the captain, he has been on the bench for Chelsea's last four games and was not named in the squad for the first five.

The defender clearly has the respect and support of his team-mates that despite struggling to claim a starting spot from Rüdiger or Luiz they believe he is captain material.

In late September, Cahill announced that he would ask for a move away from Stamford Bridge in January if he continues to be left out of the first team.

Sarri made no assurances when asked over Cahill's future.

"It depends on him. He played very often in the last seven or eight matches. I don't know, it depends on him and the club. For me Cahill is very important on the pitch and out of the pitch."

Can Sarri lead Chelsea to the Premier League title?
