Fireworks were set off in the early hours near the hotel Argentina were staying in ahead of the Copa America semi-final clash with hosts Brazil.

La Albiceleste were staying in the Radisson Blu Savassi hotel in central Belo Horizonte and according to the Associated Press, three waves of fireworks were heard after 1:15 am.

To further attempt to disturb Lionel Scaloni's side, it's also said that phone calls were made to rooms players were staying in at 6:30 in the morning.

These kind of tactics are incredibly common in South America prior to key fixtures but they have also been fairly regular in European football.

Last season some Liverpool fans made desperate attempts to give their side an advantage for the Champions League semi-final second leg by disturbing Barcelona's squad with fireworks at 3am in the morning.

Videos of the firework-setting from different angles circulated online, with one clip featuring a man saying "wake up call for Mr Messi" at the end.

There were no noise complaints filed but Barca did then look out of sorts at Anfield, losing 4-0 and crashing out of the Champions League after bottling a second leg yet again.

After experiencing similar treatment, Argentina captain Messi will be hoping for a very different result this time around.
