A remarkable 18.3 million people tuned into BBC One to watch England's opening World Cup game against Tunisia.

And more than 3 million on BBC iPlayer. That's an incredible 21 million people viewing England's dramatic victory on Monday night.

England vs. Tunisia also gained more viewers than The Royal Wedding.

Gareth Southgate's charges recorded three points thanks to a brilliant brace from captain Harry Kane who bagged a stoppage time winner, sending the country into a state of euphoria.

Fans poured onto the streets, celebrating England's win late into the night with plenty of supporters likely waking up this Tuesday morning slightly hungover.

Gary Lineker, who presented England's World Cup match, was shocked and amazed at the staggering viewing figures.

"OOOFT! Over 21 million of you watched the @BBCSport coverage of England v Tunisia. 18.3m peak on your televisions and more than 3m on @BBCiPlayer. Bloody Nora," he Tweeted.

Two-goal hero Kane was proud of the England players for persevering, and battling through refereeing decisions which he felt went against his side.

"There could have been a couple of penalties, especially when you look at their one, which looked quite soft. The VAR is there to look at those decisions," he said.

"If they don't think it's a penalty, we have to deal with it, but I struggled to get the Tunisia players off me all night. They were trying to grab hold, trying to stop us running, I couldn't move at set pieces. So maybe there was a bit of justice at the end to get one at the back post."

Kane added: "For sure, the tactics Tunisia used were a lesson for us. It's part of the game. We knew, watching the other matches, there have been a lot of soft decisions and penalties awarded, so we had to be aware of that.

"I'm just so proud we kept going, kept on fighting, and made people back home proud. It shows good character to get on with it, and it's a massive win. We spoke a lot about togetherness. We have a great bond off the pitch and it's nice to see it working on the pitch. Everyone, staff included, is delighted. We'll get on that plane happy."

England resume their World Cup campaign on Sunday at 1 pm versus Panama, before facing Belgium the following Thursday.
