Chile and Germany played out an entertaining Confederations Cup final in St Petersburg and it was the World Cup winners who emerged victorious.

The 1-0 win for Joachim Low's side, recorded thanks to Lars Stindl's opener in the 20th minute, means the Germans taste Confederations Cup success for the first time and completes a memorable few days for all those connected with German football, after the Under 21's won the European Championships by beating Spain on Friday.

Even without the bulk of their regular first-teamers, Germany were excellent over the course of the tournament and despite being penned back against Chile's golden generation for large periods in the final - and riding their luck as La Roja were guilty of fluffing some huge chances, were typically efficient, dug deep and took their big chance when it counted.

Staggeringly, the average age of the Germany side that started tonight's final was 24, and there was a mere 17 caps between them.

But this talented young group did the business, with the dogged win seeing Die Mannschaft move up to first place in the FIFA rankings.

It says a lot about the depth and quality of the German set-up that they were able to rest their big hitters and essentially play a reserve side but still go all the way and lift the trophy.

It's too bad, they're just too good.
