How Levi’s And Liverpool FC Are Helping Young People Break Into The Music Industry

The aim of the project is to give young local talent the chance to develop their musical abilities.

It's been 30 years since Liverpool FC hit the charts (remember when that was a thing?) with the infamous song 'Anfield Rap,' featuring John Barnes in some proper 80s gear. (If you've never heard or seen it, you can thank us later.)

But when you're a football club in one of the most musical, eclectic cities in the world, that legendary love of music is going to rub off. The club's anthem is probably the most famous in the world, and its players are obsessed, too. Daniel Sturridge even started a music label last year.

With the club getting more and more exciting to watch on the pitch, Liverpool's music scene is about to get another injection of energy in the form of rapper and Mercury Prize-nominated artist - and massive LFC fan - Loyle Carner.

He's the new mentor for the Levi's Music Project, a global program that has chosen Liverpool as its latest destination and is teaming up with LFC.

The aim of the project is to give young local talent the chance to develop their musical abilities.

Levi's isn't messing around. It has built a fully-equipped music studio in the Liverpool Lighthouse community centre, in the heart of Anfield.

There, youngsters will take part in workshops and one-to-ones with artists, established music figures in the city of Liverpool plus collaborators Loyle has worked with developing his own career. They'll also perform at the Sound City music festival in May 2019.

As Loyle says: "When you have talent, you don't necessarily have the means to hone it." The project has been going since 2015, with the aim of breaking down barriers to music education for the next generation by providing access to the music industry's artists, experts and professional educators.

The rapper is in good company - past projects in the UK have seen Levi's collaborate with Skepta, Vince Staples, SZA, Everything Everything and Mist.

LFC is heavily involved. The club is working with Levi's to develop the music project within the local community, providing events and experiences specifically aimed at improving the lives of those living in and around the local area.

It is also collaborating on additional projects to help fans 'show their authentic style in their everyday lives,' including an exclusive Levi's x LFC capsule collection.

Meanwhile, Loyle is just psyched to be back in Liverpool: "It's like my second home. Somewhere that I've taken so much inspiration from musically that I can't wait to get into the studio with these guys and see what they have to say through their music!"
