A joint statement from both the club and player was released.

It read:

"Everybody at Stamford Bridge would like to express our enormous gratitude to John and wish him the very best of luck for the future.

"John has given us more than two decades of dedicated and exceptional service. In that time he has displayed the utmost pride at wearing the Chelsea shirt, something he has done on 713 occasions since his debut in 1998, scoring 66 goals. He is the club's third highest all-time appearance-maker and has captained Chelsea a record 578 times.

"This season he has featured less on the field but remained an influential and inspirational member of the squad which, under Antonio Conte's guidance, sits top of the Premier League."

The 36-year old has now penned a lengthy post on Instagram in which he thanks his wife and children, teammates and managers, owner Roman Abramovich as well as thanking the supporters that he forged such a strong connection with over the years.

As seen in the very beginning of the statement, Terry believes that this is the right time for him to move on from Chelsea.

He wrote: "It's with overwhelming emotion that earlier this week the club and I announced this will be my last season as a Chelsea player.

"This has been the toughest decision of my life for me and my family, but I always envisaged leaving on the right terms, in the right way and at the right time - and that is now.

"I feel I still have regular football in me but understand that opportunities here at Chelsea will be limited, it is therefore time for a new challenge."

There is no official word on Terry's future but there is already talk of West Brom being interested in signing him, along with links to the MLS and the Chinese Super League.

Retiring from the game all together is even a possibility, and if he ends his career by lifting a fifth Premier League title with Chelsea, then what a way to bow out.
