An inspiration in every sense of the word...

Yeray Alvarez, the man who beat cancer twice in three years to continue his playing career, has signed a new seven-year contract with his beloved Athletic Bilbao.

Aged just 21, the Basque centre-half was first diagnosed with the disease in 2016 before overcoming it and returning to the pitch against Barcelona on 4 February 2017.

The testicular cancer would then return mere months later in June and Alvarez was forced to undergo further chemotherapy.

His teammates stood by him yet again, showing solidarity by shaving their heads in a truly wonderful gesture. And Alvarez duly went 2-0 up against cancer, with Athletic revealing the brilliant news in September 2017.

Alvarez was back in training shortly after and made his second first-team return in early 2018 - again on 4 February - coincidentally World Cancer Day.

And today, the 24-year old has committed his future at San Mames until 2016, with a release clause of €70 million being inserted in his deal.

He joined his boyhood club as a 13-year old and has already been a rollercoaster journey. We hope for nothing but good health and success for Alvarez in the future.
