Marcelo lasted a mere 10 minutes against Serbia before being forced off because of a back injury, and Brazil's team doctor has revealed how the injury may have been caused.

Tite was dealt a massive blow minutes into Brazil's last game of their group stage round.

The 30-year-old complained of a back problem, with Filipe Luis eventually replacing the influential defender.

Mystery surrounded the nature of Marcelo's injury who left the field in tears.

But a day removed from Brazil securing passage to the last 16, Selecao's team doctor has shed some light.

While identifying the hotel mattress as the potential reason to Marcelo's injury.

"It is still too early to make an accurate diagnosis," said Dr Lasmar via Goal. "The injury may be related to the hotel mattress."

Lasmar added: "Although our expectation is good, but we have to be calm and wait for the next few days.

"Marcelo is medicated and with medication the tendency is that the response is good and that he can play. The important thing is that there is no injury.

"They were muscle spasms. Once he feels good to train, he will return and immediately be ready to play.

"There is no recovery period."
