They see him as "an absolute priority".

FC Barcelona have been heavily linked with the likes of Paul Pogba and Adrien Rabiot in recent times but it appears as though their top transfer target lies elsewhere.

Despite the Blaugrana being quite well-stocked in the middle of the park, with Arturo Vidal and Arturo coming in for a combined £62 million after Paulinho returned to China, Sport say they have their eyes firmly fixed on Ajax's 21-year old sensation Frenkie De Jong.

De Jong has only just made his international debut, playing 44 minutes for the Netherlands and registering an assist against Peru a week ago.

But he is already been tipped next big thing coming from the famed Ajax academy and the consensus is he has the skill-set to be a top-level central midfielder.

Barcelona are desperate to land him ahead of other clubs like Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, with manager Ernesto Valverde, general manager Pep Segura, sporting director Eric Abidal and his assistant Ramon Planes all in agreement that they must do everything in their power to bring him to the Nou Camp.

In the summer, they are said to have tabled a 35 million euros offer that was knocked back by Ajax as they felt it was too low.

With De Jong contracted until 2020, Sport say they would want around 75 million euros for his services so the La Liga champions will have to get their chequebook out - although it could well be a worthwhile investment.

The former Willem II man looked perfectly at home on the international stage against world champions France at the Stade De France and already has a fan in Kylian Mbappe, who appeared to ask for his shirt after the game.
