Atlético Madrid are reportedly preparing a sensational move for Mauro Icardi as Inter Milan prepare to axe him from the San Siro.

The Argentine striker, 26, was stripped of the club captaincy last season and had an unsettled relationship with ex-Inter boss Luciano Spalletti.

According to Spanish newspaper Diario AS, Atlético are 'very attentive' of the ongoing situation and are keeping a close watch on the Inter star's situation.

Diario AS claims that a move for Icardi could happen depending on the future of Diego Costa, who has attracted interest from Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Inter boss Antonio Conte has no place for Icardi in his plans and wants Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku to be one of his marquee signings.

And Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta confirmed that the Argentina international and Radja Nainggolan would be sold this summer.

"When building a project, you have to find the right profiles," the 62-year-old Italian told Sky Sport Italia.

"We had the opportunity to speak to the players themselves, with full respect for their contractual situations, but explained the position of the club, which I think is the most important thing.

"Both players know full well they are not part of our plans. That doesn't mean we doubt their talent or capabilities, as I consider them to be two excellent players.

"Talent can win you games, but the squad wins you the league, which is the main objective we are setting out for. They are not part of our project, with all due respect."

Icardi, whose contract will expire in 2021, has also attracted interest from Juventus and Napoli.

The Spanish club could beat the competition should they trigger his €110m release clause, which became active from 1st July and runs until 15th July.

Atlético are ready to release the funds that Diego Simeone needs in order to overhaul his squad following the departures of Diego Godín, Lucas Hernandez and Rodri.

And Antoine Griezmann announced he would be leaving this summer and is expected to sign for Barcelona.

Los Rojiblancos have already snapped up the highly rated João Félix from Benfica for a whopping £113m (€126m).

They have also signed midfielder Marcos Llorente, defender Felipe and left-back Renan Lodi.
