Arsenal Set An Unwanted Champions League Record Against Bayern Munich

Arsenal Set An Unwanted Champions League Record Against Bayern Munich

Even more misery for Gunners to endure

Apologies Arsenal fans. We know you're suffering today, although surely by now you're all experienced enough to know how to deal with Champions League round of 16 disappointment that you won't mind if we rub a little bit more salt into the wounds.

As if suffering a 5-1 hiding at the hands of Bayern Munich wasn't embarrassment enough for Arsene Wenger's men last night at the Allianz Arena, the Gunners also set an unwanted Champions League record in the process.

Arjen Robben, Robert Lewandowski, Thiago and Thomas Muller fired in the goals that sent Arsenal's overall 'against' column in Europe's elite competition into record breaking territory.

Of course, some fans have brought up how the Gunners' continued presence in the Champions League means, by default, they're likely to have shipped more goals than most other English clubs.

It's a fair point to make, of course, although Arsenal's record in the tournament is also nothing to write home about, with just one final appearance in their history and six (soon to be seven) consecutive exits at the round of 16 stage putting their ever present presence in the Champions League over the past 20 years into some sort of context.

How long until Arsenal buck this embarrassing trend? And will Arsene Wenger still be in charge at the Emirates Stadium next season to reverse the Gunners' continental fortunes?
