Argentina Set To Make Surprise Change To Starting XI Against France

Argentina Set To Make Surprise Change To Starting XI Against France

A tactical tweak from Jorge Sampaoli...

Argentina are set to make a tactical tweak for the last 16 clash with France in Kazan tomorrow, and it involves Lionel Messi.

Messi finally got off the mark in this year's World Cup with a glorious goal in the massive 2-1 win over Nigeria, ending 622 minutes of World Cup football without a goal and becoming the first player to score a World Cup goal in his teens, 20s and 30s.

Though the Albiceleste skipper largely has a free role in the side, much like he does at Barcelona, he has mainly been playing from the right side and coming in off the flank.

Sergio Aguero led the line in the first two games, against Iceland and Croatia, before Gonzalo Higuain got the nod in the last group game as Argentina finally picked up three points.

However, early reports suggest as though none of the two 'No.9's will be selected from the off against France, with Messi set to return to the false nine role he made his own during his illustrious spell playing under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, where he transformed into a complete and utter phenomenon.

Sampaoli has made a fair few big changes after their disappointing performances but this would be very sudden and surprising. It's said that Messi would be the focal point of the attack, flanked by Cristian Pavon and Angel Di Maria on either wing.

It's a brave call from a man who hasn't set the world alight since taking the Argentina job, but we'll have to wait and see whether it pays off at 3pm tomorrow.

Neither Argentina or France have looked impressive as of yet but surely they will turn it on for the knockouts? Here's hoping tomorrow's game is an enjoyable one.
