The football bubble was collectively shocked following the news regarding Robinho, and there's been an update about his prison sentence including a defiant message from his head coach.

Robinho has been sentenced to nine-years in prison for taking part in a gang rape of a woman in Milan, Italy, in 2013.

An Italian court delivered their verdict by sentencing Robinho as well as five other Brazilian's for sexual assault on a 22-year-old woman.

However, the Italian Justice System does allow for 'several levels of appeal' which means the verdict cannot be enforced until the appeals process is completed.

The court has also ordered the victim to receive £53,431.02 as compensation for her suffering.

The attacker signed for AC Milan from Manchester City in 2010 after returning from a loan spell to Santos.

After four seasons at the San Siro, Robinho left to return to his boyhood club. He's plying his trade at Atletico Mineiro where he's now embroiled in huge controversy.

Though Atletico Mineiro head coach Oswaldo de Oliveira has confirmed that the club believes in his innocence: "He is a family man."

What's more, Robinho will reportedly play against Corinthians in the league today.

Reports also claim: "The Brazilian law does not recognize the Italian sentence against him, where he didn't even have the chance to defend himself."

On Friday morning, Robinho posted the following message in response to the sentence: "On the news involving the forward Robinho, relating to events of a few years ago, we would like to clarify that he already defended himself from the accusations, saying he had no involvement with the episode."
