Manchester United legend Roy Keane has trumped three other legends to be crowned the best Premier League captain of all time.

SPORTbible posted a readers' poll asking fans to vote between Keane, Steven Gerrard, John Terry and Patrick Vieira.

And the United legend, 48, was the clear favourite and took home 37 per cent of the vote.

Reds legend Gerrard, who is now managing Ranges, came second after securing 30 per cent of the vote.

Chelsea legend Terry received 20 per cent of the vote and Arsenal hero Vieira came fourth with 13 per cent.

The fiery Keane became a formidable force on the pitch for his no-nonsense approach and excellent leadership skills.

He took over the captain's armband at the Red Devils after the retirement of United legend Eric Cantona in 1997.

Sir Alex Ferguson relied on the experience of Keane and his commanding presence to continue United's success in the post-Cantona era.

The Irishman won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League before he left Old Trafford in 2005.

United legend Gary Neville also had no hesitation to say that Keane was the best captain he had played alongside.

"Roy Keane without a shadow of a doubt," the Sky Sports pundit said on Monday Night Football in 2018.

"Without a shadow of a doubt the most inspirational player I have ever played with, because he wasn't only the best player on the pitch most weeks... but the influence he had in terms of his standards, the fact that he made everybody else feel ten-foot tall, the fact that he demanded from you all the time.

"He was almost like Sir Alex Ferguson was on the training pitch and in the dressing room, there was never any drop in standard."
