Paul Scholes Makes His Premier League Top Four Prediction

Six into four doesn't go so the former Manchester United midfielder has predicted who will qualify for next season's Champions League.

Once upon a time the Premier League was made up of the 'big four' and everyone else so Champions League qualification was an open and shut case but now there's six teams it requires people like Paul Scholes to predict this season's top four.

Back in the old days Manchester United and Arsenal were perennial winners of the Premier League, Chelsea came along to make it a three horse race and Liverpool would inevitably fill up the other of the top four positions.

Then came an obvious mid table of clubs likes Spurs, West Ham, Everton, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Stoke who you never felt were too likely to go down but would never do too well either.

Manchester City's billions and Spurs evolution under Harry Redknapp and Mauricio Pochettino soon turned that into a top six and confused the landscape of the Premier League, meaning two sides every season will miss out on the Champions League the following term.

Last season Chelsea and Arsenal finished fifth and sixth but will it be the same this season with the two London sides both having changed their manager in the summer?

Speaking to the Premier League's website Paul Scholes had a shot at predicting the future, saying:

"I think Manchester City will win the Premier League again. They won the league by a distance last year and they look just as good as ever when I saw them the other day. So I expect City to win the league.

"We don't know what Chelsea are going to be like, we don't know what Arsenal are going to be like with their new coaches. But I'd go for City to win the league, Liverpool second, Manchester United third and I'll go for Tottenham fourth."

Most people think that Liverpool will be City's closest challengers this season. Jurgen Klopp's side only finished fourth last term but the additions of Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri to an already excellent side have got a lot of people excited.

Scholes has been pretty vocal on his criticisms of United under Jose Mourinho but they've signed Fred and Diogo Dalot this summer and the former midfielder clearly thinks that's enough to keep them in the top four.

Spurs are an interesting choice. They've finished in the top three for the past three seasons but Pochettino was unable to add to his squad in the summer and they have problems with their new stadium to contend with.

Who do you think will make the top four?
