The irony over the furore of the penalty and Gianluigi Buffon's sending off in Juventus Champions League game against Real Madrid is that Michael Oliver got both major decisions absolutely spot on.

It'll please no neutrals to know that the referee was correct in both awarding a controversial penalty to Real Madrid in the dying moments of their Champions League game against Juventus and subsequently the sending off that ended Buffon's career in the competition.

Having fought back from a 3-0 loss in the first leg to be level at 3-3, with extra time looming, their wouldn't have been many none Real fans who were hoping Los Blancos would go through.

But with the added 30 minutes just moments away Mehdi Benatia was adjudged to have pushed Lucas Vazquez and English ref Oliver pointed to the spot, Buffon was so incensed he got himself sent off for screaming in the ref's face and carried on the tirade after the match saying:

"Clearly you cannot have a heart in your chest, but a garbage bin. On top of that, if you don't have the character to walk on a pitch like this in a stadium like this, you can sit in the stands with your wife, your kids, drinking your Sprite and eating crisps.

"You cannot ruin the dreams of a team. I could've told the referee anything at that moment, but he had to understand the degree of the disaster he was creating. If you can't handle the pressure and have the courage to make a decision, then you should just sit in the stands and eat your crisps."

In the follow up to the match and Buffon's criticism of Oliver the man in black has been on the end of plenty of online abuse and Gary Lineker has called on Buffon to end the madness, tweeting:

Buffon was obviously very emotional both during and after the match but in questioning Oliver's courage and ability to handle pressure he was clearly wrong and it would have been far easier to not award the penalty.

It certainly was an unfortunate way for Juve to get knocked out and more than that for Buffon to end his time in the Champions League.
