Jamie Carragher Picks His Premier League Team Of The Year

The former Liverpool defender has caused some controversy for his XI based on the last 12 months.

When it comes to the best players in the Premier League it can be pretty difficult to chose who would get in a best XI from week to week but Jamie Carragher has picked his team from the past 12 months.

After nearly two weeks without it we will be welcoming Premier League football back with open arms on Saturday afternoon and with Champions League back next week we'll be back in the swing of things after international football quickly enough.

And the world's most entertaining domestic league, arguable I know, opens with a real humdinger of a doozy of a thigh rubber on Saturday when Liverpool and Manchester United clash for the first time this season.

You can bet that Sky Sports' presenters Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville will be desperate for their side to get the win, just so they can avoid the embarrassment from the other if nothing else.

The former Liverpool centre back may have given his 'foe' some early ammunition after including more Liverpool players in his team of the past year than Manchester United players. Carragher picked the team in his Telegraph column:

Who would make your Premier League team of the last 12 months?

Chelsea, who have obviously won the Premier League in the time frame that Carragher was picking his team from, have the most players with four as full backs Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta are joined by midfielders N'Golo Kante and Eden Hazard.

Spurs are the second most represented side with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld paired together at centre back an unsurprisingly Harry Kane being the lone striker.

The best striker around right now, few could argue. Image: PA

Liverpool Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane are the two picks from Carra's former team but there's only two picks from Manchester with David de Gea the only United player and Kevin de Bruyne being the only City player.

Of course one of the Liverpool players named won't even be able to make an impact during the big game at the weekend as Mane is out for six weeks after injuring himself during the international break.
