WATCH: Lionel Messi Scores His First Goal Against Gianluigi Buffon

The legendary Juventus goalkeeper had kept the Barcelona forward out in all their meetings up until tonight in the Champions League.

There aren't many goalkeepers who have managed to get the better of Lionel Messi over the years but then there aren't many goalkeepers who are Gianluigi Buffon. Now even the Italian has been beaten by him.

Ever since scoring his first goal for the Barcelona first team in the 2004/05 season Lionel Messi has been giving defenders and goalkeepers alike nightmares.

The Argentine forward has scored over 500 goals for Barcelona, become the club's highest ever goalscorer and won literally everything there is to win in club football.

Coming up against the 30 year old must be a terrifying thought for any defence as Messi has shown he can create a chance out of nothing and goalkeepers must be kept up at night due to his ability to score from anywhere.

However one goalkeeper has managed to keep a clean sheet whenever he's faced Messi and that's Gianluigi Buffon but tonight the forward broke his duck against the Italian in the Champions League and it was a beauty:

Juve and Barca last faced each other last season over two legs in the Champions League quarter-final and the Italian's managed to keep a clean sheet on both games.

The two sides also faced each other in the same competition in the final in 2015 when the Spanish side won 3-1 but the goals were scored by Ivan Rakitic, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

The Champions League is of course the only title in football left for Buffon to win. The legendary goalkeeper is due to retire at the end of the season, when he'll be 40.

With his impending retirement it's certainly possible that this match was Messi's penultimate chance to score past the former Parma man, with the return match in Turin potentially their last meeting.

The five time Ballon d'Or winner scored a second of the match in the second half taking him to 96 goals in the Champions League in his career.
