You simply cannot escape the Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo debate.

One will always be compared to the other and football fans around the world will regularly get into it over who is the better player. For some reason, not everyone can merely be satisfied by the fact that we have lived in a generation where two footballing phenomenons have played in the same era, breaking a whole host of records and claiming a host of accolades on the way.

But what would happen if these two titans of football, with more stepovers and tricks in their lockers than a magician, faced each other in a match, or more specifically 11 of them-a-side?

Fortunately YouTube channel World of PES answered the question on EVERYONE's lips!

The Youtuber has a habit of putting together a team made up of clones of the very best players in history and recently pitted a team of Ronaldinhos and Ronaldos against one another.

But he staged an even bigger game a couple of months earlier, when 'Team Messi' and 'Team Ronaldo' duelled.

Watch what went down here:

Team Messi lined up in a diamond formation, with Lionel Messi in goal, Lionel Messi across the back four, Lionel Messi in all four midfield options, and the strike partnership of Lionel Messi and Lionel Messi tasked with providing the goods in attack.

Team Ronaldo, however, opted for a more traditional 4-4-2 formation.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the man in between the sticks, in defence, midfield and attack for the duration of the game - while there were plenty of options on the bench in the form of Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the game, it's Team Messi that start off on the front foot, spraying the ball about with ease and creating openings.

Yet Ronaldo draws first blood, beating Messi at his near post with a fierce low drive from inside the area.

The response from Messi is quick though, as one of the many clones of the Argentine ace picks up the ball from deep and rifles one in from range to equalise.

And then comes some controversy.

As Ronaldo shapes to shoot in a promising position in the area, Messi goes to ground and appears to make an excellent last-ditch tackle to thwart his arch-nemesis. Yet the referee somehow spots an infringements and awards a spot-kick, where Ronaldo does the business. It's particularly enjoyable seeing 11 Messis remonstrating with the referee.

But the action continues and mere minutes later, the game is all-square again. Messi (who else!?) jinks into space and sends another sweet left-footed strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. Then, the turnaround is complete when the 29-year old slots home from close range, giving Team Messi a 3-2 lead at the break.

Team Ronaldo are out of the blocks rapidly for the second half, though, equalising in the 48th minute and bagging fourth and fifth goals soon after courtesy of a couple of emphatic finishes.

Messi gets his side back in with a stunning strike from the left, but there's time for Ronaldo to strike again - this time on the counter in the 87th minute to complete the 10-goal thriller.

Well there you have it, team Ronaldo reigns supreme. That's one way to try and settle the debate.
